12/18/09
Recent participation in some photography forums has piqued an interest in doing a Project 365. Photography has been a hobby on and off for over 40 years and in the last 18 months my interest has intensified. So I've decided to jump in, give it a shot (no pun intended) and see if I can shoot every day for a year.

My expectations for this project are that it will provide motivation to expand my skills both behind the camera and in post-processing and provide a vehicle for experimentation. My photog pal Doug has been a great mentor, so I want to publicly say thanks; this is your fault (kidding of course).

It is going to be a learning experience, so any and all comments, critiques and encouraging words are welcome.

Thanks for viewing.

Ripples on the River

12/6/10 - Day 353
Notwithstanding a very busy day, at 18 degrees F, there wasn't going to be outside shooting during the narrow window of sunshine.  I happened to glance out my office window towards the river and saw bright shadows/reflections of surrounding buildings.  Pulled out my Samsung point and shoot and fired off two shots for today's Daily Shoot #386: "Make a photograph today with strong direct light that casts crisp dark shadows."

Rear Windshield

11/21/10 - Day 338
It rained lightly this morning and I caught this reflection when going out to meet some buddies for coffee.  Fortunately, I had read the Daily Shoot assignment #371: "Find or make a reflection in a window today and shoot through it to create a layered composition."

Facade in a Facade

11/11/10 - Day 328
There are lots of opportunities to shoot building facades in Chicago that can tell a story. Unfortunately, today I knew there would not be time to capture one with an in depth story. I was presented with this view when walking to my office. The rising sun shining on the elder statesman as reflected in the starkness of the younger generation tells a little about the times each of these structures were built. Shot for today's Daily Shoot #361: "Facades give buildings their public face. Make a photo of a building's facade today that tells its story."

Oyster Point Marina

11/3/10 - Day 320
Stopped off at the marina on the way to checking into my hotel, looking for a naturally framed shot to submit for today's Daily Shoot #353: "Frames outline the focus of a subject. Make a creative photo with natural framing: windows, doors, trees, borders, etc."

It was so beautiful, I brought out my watercolors and painted the scene rather than photographing it. NOT. Dry brush filter in PSE.

Bottoms Up

10/13/10 - Day 299
Shot for today's Daily Shoot #332: "Think upside down & really change your view point. Make a photo where you or your subject is upside down. (@PrimalPhil)"

New District Watercolor

10/7/10 - Day 293
Notwithstanding the rain and chill, we covered a lot of ground today. We absolutely love Istanbul...a frenetic city with wonderful, warm people, great inexpensive food, and more retail than one could ever imagine. This image was taken in the rain on Istiklal Street, a main shopping/strolling drag in the New District.

For the technical-minded, this is SOOC.

Reflection Deception

9/21/10 - Day 277
Squeezed into our tiny powder room this evening to use the mirror for today's Daily Shoot #310: "Use a mirror as part of a composition in a photograph today.  Show yourself in the image if you'd like!"  Thought I'd also try a little deception on the perspective at the same time.  Check out the set-up shot at www.flickr.com/photos/jeffm211/5013034573/ to see the deception.

"X" Marks the Spot

8/9/10 - Day 234
I see this building from my office window and knew early in the day that I found my triangles for today's Daily Shoot #267.

Watercolor

6/25/10 - Day 189
Knowing that I would land in Chicago after midnight, I wanted to get a photo at the airport today before boarding my flight.  The flight was leaving from SFO's international terminal, so the modern structure and polished floor made a great subject.  However, since there was sufficient time before the flight, I decided to paint this watercolor instead and then take a photo of it (yeah, right!).

11th Hour Abstract

6/23/10 - Day 187
It was getting late tonight and I needed a photo.  Saw some cool effects of a red indicator light through a hand soap dispenser in our bathroom and figured "what the hell."  Grabbed the macro lens and fired off a few shots.

Puddles

6/18/10 - Day 182
Skies opened up today around 4pm and the aftermath was a messy walk to the train station.  Under protection of a canopy, I just started shooting feet walking through puddles.  I chose this one because the leading line of the reflection satisfies today's Daily Shoot assignment #215.

Reflections in B/W

4/9/10 - Day 112
Absolutely no time to shoot today.  Got off the train at dusk, saw reflections in the retention pond and took a few shots, figuring "Ah Ha - saved by the reflections!"  Not so.  They all looked like crap...until post-processing.  Ah Ha - saved by Lightroom!

Reflections in a Multi-Pane Window

3/15/10 - Day 87
Trying to use the Daily Shoot assignment as my theme, I took several shots of trees in silhouette.  This image is a reflection of the sunset in our front window, which has 3 panes of glass.  Each pane displays its own reflection, hence the shadow effect.  See my Smugmug gallery for the "runner-up" shot.

Catchlights in a Mirror

3/14/10 - Day 86
Today's Daily Shoot assignment was "Sunday challenge: Catchlights in the eyes make a portrait sing. Make a portrait of someone with catchlights in their eyes."  This self-portrait was taken in a mirror using a 90mm macro lens.  Lots of trial and error to get the framing and focus.

Rain

3/2/10 - Day 74
Raining hard in SF this morning.  With 40 minutes on the tarmac waiting for a gate, I was able to play with the dials on the point & shoot (Daily Shoot assignment). This shot was taken out the airplane window using the supermacro setting.

Reflections of Negative Space

2/25/10 - Day 69
Today's Daily Shoot assignment is: "Negative space can be just as important to a composition as your primary subject.  Explore negative space in a photograph."

What is the primary subject - the reflective glass curtainwall or the reflected buildings?  What is the negative space - the reflected buildings or the sky between them?  I think it can be interpreted several ways.

Two Months Down

2/18/10 - Day 62
Tomorrow will be a difficult day to shoot so I decided to do the "start of month" self-portrait one day early.

ORD at 10

2/17/10 - Day 61
Landing at O'Hare tonight, I was very surprised at how deserted the United terminal was.  Rarely having the opportunity to see it so empty, I placed the camera on the floor near the center of Terminal C to get this shot back toward the gates.

Celestial

2/10/10 - Day 54
This shot was taken just after midnight during the snowstorm which was the subject of yesterday's posting.  I shot this through a sliding glass door, the abstract pattern created by an outdoor light fixture and melted snowflakes on the glass.  See my Runner-ups gallery at Smugmug for an additional shot in this series.

One Month Down

1/19/10 - Day 32
Today marks the start of the second month for my Project 365.  I've heard that tradition requires the first image of every month (the 19th, in my case) to be a self-portrait.  This image was taken at one of our recently completed projects in Redwood City, CA.  The glass curtainwall and earlier rainstorm makes for some interesting reflections on the building and pavement.
