12/18/09
Recent participation in some photography forums has piqued an interest in doing a Project 365. Photography has been a hobby on and off for over 40 years and in the last 18 months my interest has intensified. So I've decided to jump in, give it a shot (no pun intended) and see if I can shoot every day for a year.

My expectations for this project are that it will provide motivation to expand my skills both behind the camera and in post-processing and provide a vehicle for experimentation. My photog pal Doug has been a great mentor, so I want to publicly say thanks; this is your fault (kidding of course).

It is going to be a learning experience, so any and all comments, critiques and encouraging words are welcome.

Thanks for viewing.

Bonus Day

3/31/10 - Day 103
Any time you can put the top down in March, it's a bonus.

Green Ticker

3/30/10 - Day 102
Today's Daily Shoot theme is the color green. Green is a difficult color to find outdoors in March around Chicago.  Walking to lunch, I saw this financial ticker at the Mercantile Exchange and thought about the green color reporting info about our greenbacks.  How fitting.

It's Good With...

3/29/10 - Day 101
...butter, peanut butter, jelly, eggs, etc.  Something to look forward to for the next week. Yum.

Sixty-One Years

3/28/10 - Day 100
Lin's folks celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary yesterday.  I wanted a meaningful subject for my 100th day image, so I shot this before we took them out to brunch today.

Back to Amazon

3/27/10 - Day 99
Pulled the plug today on the 17-50mm f2.8 experiment and am sending it back to Amazon.  Even though faster, it has just too much overlap with my 18-200mm to justify the expense at the moment.  This shot actually uses my prime 50mm f1.8 with a reversing ring - pretty cool playing with depth of field.

The Great Giveaway

3/26/10 - Day 98
Shoes, shoes and more shoes.  After Lin spent a day cleaning out her closets, Goodwill and American Cancer Society thrift shops will once again be stocked.  In this one tranche, she is giving away more shoes than I own.  Good timing because today's Daily Shoot is to think of a subject beginning with the letters "D" or "S" and make a photo.

Upgrade

3/25/10 - Day 97
Got an email today that my upgrade came through.  I hadn't had any earlier opportunity to shoot today but was able to get this shot off looking back from my seat right before they shut the cabin door.  Definitely beats that middle seat in the rear that was on my reservation!

Cat on a Hot Tin Hood

3/24/10 - Day 96
Saw this guy as I parked my car at the office this morning.  Obviously nothing to do with the Tennessee Williams play of a similar name.

Carnitas y Pacifico

3/23/10 - Day 95
Dinner tonight at Los Pinos, my all time favorite Mexican restaurant in South San Francisco.

Anywhere, USA

3/22/10 - Day 94
Driving home from Columbus, OH today, we stopped along I-65 for some food and a stretch.  We could have been anywhere, along any interstate in the country.  This shot was not pulled from my archive; rather it was taken this afternoon in I Have No Idea Where, Indiana.

Morning after Beachland

3/21/10 - Day 93
Breakfast after the Shank Bone gig last night.  First P365 shot with the cell phone camera.

Rockin' the House

3/20/10 - Day 92
Drove to Cleveland today to see our son's band play at Beachland Ballroom.  Great groove, people dancing, lighted hoola hoops, spotlights blazing. Shank Bone rocked the house!  Mom & Dad were pretty proud.  Click the link for the "runner-up" image at my Smugmug gallery.

I Gotta Have a V8!

3/19/10 - Day 91
Three month anniversary for my Project 365; self-portrait day.

Old & Timeless

3/18/10 - Day 90
The Daily Shoot assignment today was: "Find something that's so old it's almost timeless and make a photograph of it."  I shot some old buildings and an old watch, but I just had to go with the old friend.

Minutes from the Office

3/17/10 - Day 89
It was a magnificent day out, so at lunchtime I wanted to do the Daily Shoot assignment: "Grab your camera and walk 2 minutes in any direction.  Stop.  Find a photo worth making from where you stopped and post it."  Actually, I took two shots;  1 minute and 3 minutes respectively, after leaving the office.  By the way, there was no post-processing on that blue sky...it's real.

Tasty Trio

3/16/10 - Day 88
Three things that go together for today's Daily Shoot.

Reflections in a Multi-Pane Window

3/15/10 - Day 87
Trying to use the Daily Shoot assignment as my theme, I took several shots of trees in silhouette.  This image is a reflection of the sunset in our front window, which has 3 panes of glass.  Each pane displays its own reflection, hence the shadow effect.  See my Smugmug gallery for the "runner-up" shot.

Catchlights in a Mirror

3/14/10 - Day 86
Today's Daily Shoot assignment was "Sunday challenge: Catchlights in the eyes make a portrait sing. Make a portrait of someone with catchlights in their eyes."  This self-portrait was taken in a mirror using a 90mm macro lens.  Lots of trial and error to get the framing and focus.

Rotini

3/13/10 - Day 85
Not only is rotini good to eat, but it works really well in physical therapy for Lin's hand surgery recovery.  Additionally, I think this image works for today's Daily Shoot assignment, curves & squiggles.

Laptop (circa 1981)

3/12/10 - Day 84
Today's Daily Shoot assignment was "Electronic gadgets pervade our world. You've probably got several. Make a photo of your favorite gadget today."  I approached this assignment tongue in cheek, shooting my very first computer.  Yep, I still have it!

Roti or BenjYehuda?

3/11/10 - Day 83
BenjYehuda is my choice.  Very tasty & large portions.  212 W. Van Buren; check it out.

In the Zone

3/10/10 - Day 82
Today's Daily Shoot assignment was to make a photo of a street scene.  No real chance to shoot during the day, but I was able to catch this jogger tuned into her music late this afternoon.

Portillo's or Al's?

3/9/10 - Day 81
Portillo's, hands down!  Went to the new Al's at Adams & Jefferson today for lunch; mediocre at best.  I think the sign needs to be changed.

Monday Morning Fog

3/8/10 - Day 80
Woke up to this gloomy day and snapped this shot on the way to the train station.

Physiogram 1

3/7/10 - Day 79
There is a great UK digital SLR photography magazine that sometimes describes different "projects."  In this one, I suspended a small light from a thread in a dark room and took long exposures while the suspended light rotated.   Every attempt created a different pattern.  For some additional images, go to this Smugmug gallery.  I plan to definitely explore this technique further.

First Ride Out

3/6/10 - Day 78
A beautiful, sunny morning with temps in the mid-20's meant getting out on the mountain bike for the first outside ride of the year.  It felt great, although the ride did highlight the lack of winter training.

Coming & Going

3/5/10 - Day 77
Returning to Chicago from San Francisco today, I had a rear-facing seat in the reconfigured business cabin of a United 767.  It was a real interesting perspective and allowed me to capture a plane landing to the west as we were taking off to the south.

The Wanderer

3/4/10 - Day 76
As I was pulling out of the hotel parking lot this morning, I saw this guy wandering down the street, plastic bags in hand.  I only had a couple of seconds to pull out the point & shoot and got one shot off through the car windshield.

Rube Goldberg

3/3/10 - Day 75
Did a walk-thru of an existing property today, including the roof.  This image is a small section of the maze of piping, ductwork and equipment.

Rain

3/2/10 - Day 74
Raining hard in SF this morning.  With 40 minutes on the tarmac waiting for a gate, I was able to play with the dials on the point & shoot (Daily Shoot assignment). This shot was taken out the airplane window using the supermacro setting.

Idle Gear

3/1/10 - Day 73
For the first year in 12, my scuba gear is idle the first week of March. I decided to pass this year on the annual dive trip but my buddies are partaking of the warm water in Bonaire.
