12/18/09
Recent participation in some photography forums has piqued an interest in doing a Project 365. Photography has been a hobby on and off for over 40 years and in the last 18 months my interest has intensified. So I've decided to jump in, give it a shot (no pun intended) and see if I can shoot every day for a year.

My expectations for this project are that it will provide motivation to expand my skills both behind the camera and in post-processing and provide a vehicle for experimentation. My photog pal Doug has been a great mentor, so I want to publicly say thanks; this is your fault (kidding of course).

It is going to be a learning experience, so any and all comments, critiques and encouraging words are welcome.

Thanks for viewing.

Self Study

7/31/10 - Day 225
For today's Daily Shoot #258, thought I would experiment with some off camera flash in a self-portrait.  Didn't like any of them until I put on the macro lens.  Shooting in the dark was difficult, however the framing for this shot only need some slight cropping.

Fifth Season

7/30/10 - Day 224
My interpretation of today's Daily Shoot assignment #257 was more about the creation of pavement than the pavement itself.

Xmas in July

7/29/10 - Day 223
Another one of those "H.S." days for Project365. Out to dinner with friends at a great Cuban restaurant in the city (Cafe Laguardia) and hadn't taken a shot all day.  10pm with a 45 minute drive home didn't leave much time to get a shot in.  Just before leaving, saw these lights in a lounge area of the restaurant and thought of the Daily Shoot assignment #256: "Turn the tables and make a photograph of a light source today. Light bulb, window, or even the sun (be careful!)."  Camera phone to the rescue; missed day averted!

600 MPH

7/28/10 - Day 222
A typical day of motion...shot for today's Daily Shoot #255: "The world is always in motion. Make a photo that conveys a bit of your own motion to your viewer."   Chasing the sunset on the way home from Boston.

Sixth Sense

7/27/10 - Day 221
Daily Shoot assignment #254: "Today's theme is the number 6.  Make a photograph of the number six, six objects, or express six in an alternate way."

"Two Birds with One Stone"

7/26/10 - Day 220
Daily Shoot assignment #253 and dessert all in one subject.  Shoot it...eat it...yum.

Jicama

7/25/10 - Day 219
Two independent themes converged and led me to today's shot for the Daily Shoot assignment #252:

1) Two of my Daily Shoot friends (Remek & Zev) are terrific when it comes to lighting.  Today, I found the stand for my SB-600 flash unit and decided to try remote triggering of the off-camera flash from the on-camera flash.

2) Lin went to the fruit & vegetable store and brought home a whole jicama, which I had never seen before, other than cut up in strips.  I decided this would be a perfect subject to explore depth through side lighting.

Twin Peaks

7/24/10 - Day 218
Another shot taken at the Denver airport.  The cloudy skies make an interesting negative space for the peaks of the airport structure…or is it the other way around?  Daily Shoot assignment #251.

Cheese

7/23/10 - Day 217
Great trip to Denver to visit my son.  Had to chance to see a band I like (String Cheese Incident) at Red Rocks, a venue I've heard a lot about but never seen.  Pretty amazing place.

Tent Structure 2

7/22/10 - Day 216
Another chance to shoot today in the Denver airport (see Day 35).  Used this shot for the Daily Shoot #249.

Light at the End of the Tunnel

7/21/10 - Day 215
Nope, actually "Light at the Top of the Skylight" would be a more accurate description.  Humongous skylight shot today at one of our construction projects.

Grooves

7/20/10 - Day 214
Got this shot early this morning for today's Daily Shoot assignment #247.  No lighting added beyond ambient condtion and not converted to grayscale.

"Gorgle"

7/19/10 - Day 213
Growing up, my boys loved to play with their grandpa's "gorgle" (neck skin).  For today's Daily Shoot assignment #246, my father-in-law was a perfect and willing subject.

7/18/10 - Day 212
Experimented with some candles for today's Daily Shoot assignment #245.

Lens Sniffer

7/17/10 - Day 211
Went to hang out at a friends pool today.  Took advantage of their dog Chloe's curiosity and was able to snap off a few shots.

Dessert

7/16/10 - Day 210
A first class cookie on the way home from San Francisco.  All natural lighting; window at camera left.  For Daily Shoot #243.

WTF?

7/15/10 - Day 209
There were a lot of these moments on the Half Moon Bay Ocean course today.

Panic Shot

7/14/10 - Day 208
10:30pm.  No shot yet.  In hotel room.  Low POV for Daily Shoot #241 needed.  Running out of time.  Panic.  Go back out to shoot vs. find something in the room?  Desk lamp.  Water bottle.  Bingo!

Zebra Clouds

7/13/10 - Day 207
Even after a couple million miles of flying, until today I never saw a cloud pattern like this.

4,712 / 7,583

7/12/10 - Day 206
Miles/Kilometers - just about broken in.  Shot for today's Daily Shoot #239.

Reach for the Sun

7/11/10 - Day 205
Saw these great flowers on my bike ride this morning and went back in the afternoon to shoot them for today's Daily Shoot #238: "Find a scene that's dominated by one color and make a photograph of it.  Use light and shadow to accentuate detail."

Aftermath...

7/10/10 - Day 204
...of a 53 mile bike ride is a nap on the deck.  For today's Daily Shoot #237; maybe this will get me off the hook for a 7/19 monthly self-portrait.

TenForty

7/9/10 - Day 203
Bad news is I took a day off work and spent the entire time working on my taxes.  Good news is mid-July is the earliest I've sent stuff to the accountant in 15 years.  This shot definitely doesn't work for today's Daily Shoot, but I did take some others you can check out at my Flickr photostream.

Snaps in Space

7/8/10 - Day 202
Illuminated, but not internally like the last two days.  Four objects to satisfy today's Daily Shoot #235.

Bright Spot

7/7/10 - Day 201
Walking off the train this morning, and after reading the Daily Shoot assignment #234, the bright spot at the end of the tracks caught my attention.  Two days in a row of illuminated colors...what will tomorrow bring?

On or Off?

7/6/10 - Day 200
Both. When the blue light is on, the TV is off.  Daily Shoot #233.

Boy on a Bike

7/5/10 - Day 199
I read the Daily Shoot assignment this morning before heading out on a bike ride.  My interpretation screamed out "fisheye", so I recruited my buddy Irwin after our ride.  This shot makes a close object appear more distant...not quite the intent of the assignment.  Nonetheless, we had quite a few yucks during this shoot, so please forgive the departure.

Retro Ride

7/4/10 - Day 198
I took a little different twist on today's Daily Shoot assignment #231.  Every July 4th our cycling group does an Independence Day bike ride.  Today was a celebration of a "retro" bike ride…the way my buddy Irwin and I used to ride several years ago.  The statistics are not impressive (just do the math), but taking it easy, exploring neighborhoods (and parade routes), cruising on paved trails, stopping to eat mid-ride, and being able to just kibitz along the way was a reminder of why I started cycling in the first place.  I've been riding with a great group of guys, however they've gotten so fast, I just can't keep up and have therefore not been too excited about getting on the bike.  Today's ride brought back the excitement.

Avoiding Collapse

7/3/10 - Day 197
Looked for signs today that conveyed an irony and wasn't successful.  Decided to make the Daily Shoot assignment #230 more of a composition challenge instead.

Bathing Beauty

7/2/10 - Day 196
Went out tonight to shoot at a local fountain in order to submit on today's Daily Shoot assignment #229.  I didn't see this when shooting, but when reviewing, discovered the form of a woman's body arising from the pool.

37 Years & Counting

7/1/10 - Day 195
Not much time to shoot today; it is our 37th anniversary and we're headed out for the evening.
