12/18/09
Recent participation in some photography forums has piqued an interest in doing a Project 365. Photography has been a hobby on and off for over 40 years and in the last 18 months my interest has intensified. So I've decided to jump in, give it a shot (no pun intended) and see if I can shoot every day for a year.

My expectations for this project are that it will provide motivation to expand my skills both behind the camera and in post-processing and provide a vehicle for experimentation. My photog pal Doug has been a great mentor, so I want to publicly say thanks; this is your fault (kidding of course).

It is going to be a learning experience, so any and all comments, critiques and encouraging words are welcome.

Thanks for viewing.

Above the Bridge

4/30/10 - Day 133
A three hour delay at SFO due to weather in Chicago and the need for additional fuel resulted in a takeoff on runway 28R out to the west.  Although rare, when it does happen, it is usually a treat because the views are either of Marin or the City.  Turning back to the east, I was able to get a shot of the Golden Gate Bridge.  Small consolation for what turned out to be a 4+ hour delay.

Someone Has...

4/29/10 - Day 132
..a twisted sense of humor.  Take a close look at the sticker on the urinal.  Also works well for today's Daily Shoot.

Best Burrito

4/28/10 - Day 131
This was without doubt the toughest shooting day since I started P365.  Jammed up all day and had barely enough time to grab dinner at my all time favorite burrito place, Los Compadres in South San Francisco, before going to a marathon City Council meeting.  As we were getting our burritos,  the fixin's for the dinner crowd was being grilled up and I was fortunate to even get this shot off with my camera phone.  Today is my only "one shot day" so far.

Pumping Concrete

4/27/10 - Day 130
Visited some PMA project jobsites today in San Diego.  Some great things going on.  This is a shot of concrete columns being poured for a multi-level parking structure.

Grand Canyon

4/26/10 - Day 129
I couldn't possibly fly over the Grand Canyon without making it the subject of today's photo.  Taken on the way to San Diego.  The runner-up shot better shows the Colorado River in the canyon.

Sax Man

4/25/10 - Day 128
Gloomy day today so I took the Daily Shoot Challenge: "Side lighting can emphasize texture and add depth to a photo. Make a dramatic photo with side lighting today."  Took a piece of sculpture we have and placed it in front of a west facing window.  Post-processing in B/W made it more dramatic and added depth.

Yard Art

4/24/10 - Day 127
I've been experimenting with Lightroom presets and have started to create some of my own.  Therefore, today's Daily Shoot assignment was perfect: "Experiment in the digital darkroom today.  Make a photo and post-process it any way you like to unleash your creativity."  I went looking for a colorful subject upon which I could apply my new "Paint the Scene" preset.  For comparison, I've uploaded the original image to my Runner-ups gallery on Smugmug.

Pattern Glass

4/23/10 - Day 126
Today's Daily Shoot assignment was: "...Make a photo of a repeating subject while considering composition and DOF."  About to give up and just shoot something else for my P365, I noticed the pattern on the glass in our illuminated kitchen cabinets.  The 50mm/f1.8 allowed for some good depth of field options.

Spring Explosion

4/22/10 - Day 125
Today's Daily Shoot assignment is: "Spring has arrived in the Northern Hemisphere.  Make any photo that shows new life!"  This flower, no more than a half inch around with stamens reaching for the sky, was the most dynamic of the series.  See my Smugmug gallery for two runner-up shots.

Old School

4/21/10 - Day 124
Today's Daily Shoot assignment is "...Make a photo today that in some way conveys your taste in music."  Pulled out the old turntable and old vinyl for this shot.

Not There

4/20/10 - Day 123
Today's Daily Shoot assignment is "Make a photo of something that isn't there."  Since it's not there, it means that it's in the rough, the woods, the sand or the water.  Never on the fairway.

I Don't Need No Stinkin' V8...

4/19/10 - Day 122
...because I have an Inline 6.  Today is the four month anniversary of my P365, hence a self-portrait day.  See 3/19/10 for the first V8-themed image.

Motto

4/18/10 - Day 121
In keeping with the theme of Lin's shoes, this plaque was a gift from her friends.  They know her well.

40 Miles of Heaven & Hell

4/17/10 - Day 120
Actually, hell came first for 20 miles directly into a strong wind.  This self-timer photo was taken at the halfway point, right before 20 miles of heaven with the wind at our back.  Ross, Scott, Carey, Steve, Stu and yours truly.

Saved from Extinction

4/16/10 - Day 119
Today's Daily Shoot assignment saved these shoes.  Lin and I were searching for something colorful when she pulled these out of her tossaway pile.  They are now back in the closet...saved from extinction.  Check out my Smugmug gallery for the runner-up shot.

Hidden in Plain Sight

4/15/10 - Day 118
I've seen this logo a million times, but not until a conversation this past Saturday with Doug & Eduardo, did I ever see the arrow.  Now, it is the only thing I see.  Was it designed this way or was it a coincidence?

Muni Stop

4/14/10 - Day 117
3rd & Market; one of San Francisco's busiest Muni stops.  Shot at 10:15pm, there is still plenty of activity in this area.

Heaven on a Plate

4/13/10 - Day 116
Dark chocolate with raspberry sauce - it tasted far better than this photo looks.  Thanks to Landmark Builders for hosting a great dinner where this delicious dessert was served!

Colors for Safety

4/12/10 - Day 115
Leaving the office today, I turned to the Daily Shoot for an idea.  "Look for colors that complement each other and make a photo using complementary colors to full effect today."  Then I saw the project site safety vest sitting on my credenza.  Perfect - complementary colors that help keep us safe.

Goose Season

4/11/10 - Day 114
The geese are out so today's Daily Shoot assignment was timely.  After shooting with some really great glass yesterday, I wanted to try out my slower lenses and see what I could do with depth of field.

Jacked Up

4/10/10 - Day 113
Shooting in Racine today with Doug, Eduardo and Sid.  For additional Racine images, see my Smugmug gallery.

Reflections in B/W

4/9/10 - Day 112
Absolutely no time to shoot today.  Got off the train at dusk, saw reflections in the retention pond and took a few shots, figuring "Ah Ha - saved by the reflections!"  Not so.  They all looked like crap...until post-processing.  Ah Ha - saved by Lightroom!

Blue Shoes

4/8/10 - Day 111
Another sidewalk-level, drizzling rain shot.  The blue slacks were a stroke of luck.  Take a look at my runner-up shot for today entitled "Red Laces".  Consistent with the instructions of today's Daily Shoot, these shots were taken with my small point & shoot.

Blue Umbrellas

4/7/10 - Day 110
Today in a drizzling rain, I took a few shots at sidewalk level before hustling to the train.  In review, I liked this one where the two umbrellas could be isolated.

Aftermath of a Sump Pump Overload

4/6/10 - Day 109
Not a good morning. Drying out in process.

Q: How often...

4/5/10 - Day 108
...can you use an orange segment?
A: Once in a Blue Moon.

Oh What a Relief It Is

4/4/10 - Day 107
We can always count on RG for an unscheduled stop on a long ride.  With the wind today, we needed the rest anyway.

Part of the Kit

4/3/10 - Day 106
Today's Daily Shoot assignment is "Paper is versatile and malleable. From napkins to origami, it's all around.  Make a photo of something made of paper."  This shot is a stack of camera & lens boxes.  Not one of my best, but I ran out of patience.

I wanted to experiment with depth of field using the 50mm f1.8 and a flashlight technique used by a fellow 365er at "Annoyingly Boring?".   I've got a way to go to master the lighting and DoF technique like PG has.

Yellow & Black

4/2/10 - Day 105
Athletic shoes have to provide support and comfort...but these also look really cool and therefore qualify for today's Daily Shoot which calls for a "fashion photo".  Best pair I've owned for a long time.

Spring Fling

4/1/10 - Day 104
They made me do it!  With cold and rain predicted for the weekend, we just had to take advantage of the 80 degree, sunny weather.  27 miles, 1580 calories...it felt great!
