I Can't Believe It's a Year

12/18/10 - Day 365

Relief. Accomplishment. Emptiness. Pride. Grateful.

These are some of the feelings I am experiencing today as I conclude Project 365.

Relief: The intensity of this undertaking was beyond what I had expected. When I committed to do this project and gained a following, it was important to me to not only shoot every day, but also post every day. With the exception of a handful of days, I did that. But there were many evenings when the pressure was on and sacrifices were made to get this done. So after today, at least for a while, that pressure will be relieved and I can engage in some additional activities otherwise forgone.

Accomplishment: I feel a sense of accomplishment having achieved my objectives for Project 365. I see things differently and am more creative behind the camera and in the digital darkroom than 365 days ago. I also realize there is still a long way to go reach the level of work by those I admire.

Emptiness: As I write this, there is a sense of emptiness in the pit of my stomach as this project has occupied a portion of every single day for a year. I'm pretty sure it won't last long, but it is here today.

Pride: I'm proud of the body of work I created this past year and look forward to publishing it for friends and family who have traveled the path with me. No doubt in my mind that I'm a better photographer now than 365 days ago.

Grateful: Most importantly, I am grateful for the support I received along the way from friends, family and complete strangers. From 50 email followers that received the photo every morning to new friends I've met via Flickr, Daily Shoot & MacroMondays, from strangers happening onto the blog to new friends I met on the train because of photography (Doug first, then Frank) - each of you have provided the ingredients of inspiration, ideas, knowledge and camaraderie. And for that, I offer my profound thanks. And a special thanks goes to Mrs. Wonderful, Lin, for putting up with my obsession.

So what's next? Giving up photography is not an option. I'm planning a two week "breather" which means I'll probably shoot & post informally and then launch into a Project52, shooting at least one shot a week (probably more) for a year. Not sure of the format yet but stay tuned. Once set-up, I'll provide a link from this site and those that wish to can register for automatic email delivery. I’ll also have more time to follow the photostreams of my new and very talented Flickr friends.

O'Hare Airport, holiday decorations, equality --> during the holiday season, joy should be experienced across all 4 corners of the world. I used the SymmetriCam to capture a 4-way image expressing holiday cheer, using the airport location to represent the global nature of the message.

Notwithstanding a very busy day, at 18 degrees F, there wasn't going to be outside shooting during the narrow window of sunshine. I happened to glance out my office window towards the river and saw bright shadows/reflections of surrounding buildings. Other than the individual photos I've taken every day during the last year for my Project 365, Daily Shoot, and other photo groups, I've done virtually nothing artistic. The lone exception is the coffee table book I put together from our 2009 trip to Spain. Actually, I'm pretty proud of it.

The light snow covering on the deck made it pretty easy to accomplish today's Daily Shoot assignment #381: "Use vignetting in a photograph today. Either add it in post (easier) or do it in camera via lens or lighting (harder)." Did not use the vignetting sliders at all, only a little exposure and recovery to bring out the detail. And, a little creative placement of the flashlight beam. Check out my Flickr photostream for the runner-up shot.

There are lots of opportunities to shoot building facades in Chicago that can tell a story. Unfortunately, today I knew there would not be time to capture one with an in depth story. I was presented with this view when walking to my office. The rising sun shining on the elder statesman as reflected in the starkness of the younger generation tells a little about the times each of these structures were built. The image was fairly desaturated, but the yellow/gold was pretty ugly, so I used the sliders...no bonus points for the Daily Shoot #355: "Make a photo today with a subject low in color saturation. Bonus points for not using a software slider!"

Driving into San Francisco this evening, I was stuck in traffic so pulled out the trusty SymmetriCam on my cell phone to capture an image for P365. It wasn't until I got back to my hotel and put it on the computer that I realized the brightness of the tail lights would qualify for today's Daily Shoot #354: "Today, make a photo that emphasizes or even exaggerates brightness in a scene."

As an aside, the high-rise building that dominates the skyline in 4 locations is a residential project for which my firm managed the development from the ground up (One Rincon Hill).

Stopped off at the marina on the way to checking into my hotel, looking for a naturally framed shot to submit for today's Daily Shoot #353: "Frames outline the focus of a subject. Make a creative photo with natural framing: windows, doors, trees, borders, etc."

It was so beautiful, I brought out my watercolors and painted the scene rather than photographing it. NOT. Dry brush filter in PSE.

It was a great 45 mile, 3 county bike ride today on the Fox River Trail and Illinois Prairie Path. A little (ok, a lot) out of our way due to some trail closures, we found ourselves riding through the town of West Chicago. For us Chicago natives, the faded Rexall sign brought back lots of memories. Rexall, back in the day, was a prevalent drug store name. Haven't seen one of these signs in many, many years.

Today's Daily Shoot #347 just screamed once again for going to the SymmetriCam on my smart phone: "Make a photograph today that has a strongly centered composition." The subject was selected based on a request from my Flickr friend @muffett68 to see more of the sculpture and building shown in yesterday's post.

This sculpture is a custom designed water feature for a 3 building campus project we completed about two years ago. Providing public art was part of the requirements necessary to obtain the municipal entitlements.

It was hand made about 80-100 years ago by the Yamut tribe located in Turkmenistan (Central Asia and formerly part of the Soviet Union). It's one of the goodies we bought when in Istanbul.

This is NOT a commentary on the Turkish economy, which seemed very robust when we were in Istanbul. Rather, just playing around with a leftover 5 TL bill while importing some images to Lightroom, I was able to get it to stand on edge with very little bend. Using the multiple exposure function, I thought edge and flat would make an interesting composition. Taken for today's Daily Shoot #335: "Make a photograph of an edge of something today. The edge of a knife, the waters edge, or some other edge."

Newport Music Hall

10/14/10 - Day 300
My son's band, Shank Bone (shankbonemusic.com), was the opening act tonight at Newport Music Hall in Columbus, Ohio. This venue is the largest and most famous they've played to date. I was not going to miss it. Shank Bone did not disappoint and I was a proud pop. BTW, my son is the drummer.

Suffering major jet lag today. I thought one good night's sleep would overcome it...wrong! As such, didn't want to spend a lot of time tonight so I just shot one of the Turkish rugs we brought home from Istanbul. We're still learning the meaning of all the symbols. After two wonderful weeks in Greece & Istanbul, time to return home. We were sad to leave; Hydra, Athens, Santorini and Istanbul are all amazing places that were coupled with memorable people experiences.

Today we went to a section of Istanbul called Kadikoy which is located on the Asian continent. The open market there was incredible, with all the locals doing their grocery and other shopping. This delivery guy with basket on back, was scouting for customers.

Yesterday I mentioned the amount of retail/shopping there is in Istanbul. Today we experienced throngs of people shopping like never before. Makes a shopping mall at Christmas back home seem like a ghost town. This image is taken in the Grand Bazaar, a rabbit warren of 4000 shops, all indoors. Not even Lin could scratch the surface. Truly an assault on the senses.

Notwithstanding the rain and chill, we covered a lot of ground today. We absolutely love Istanbul...a frenetic city with wonderful, warm people, great inexpensive food, and more retail than one could ever imagine. This image was taken in the rain on Istiklal Street, a main shopping/strolling drag in the New District.

For the technical-minded, this is SOOC.

We hired a private tour guide today to take us through some of the major Istanbul sights. This image is of the Hagia Sophia, started in 532 A.D. and finished in 537 A.D., which for c. 900 years served as the "eastern Vatican". With the Ottoman takeover, it was converted to Istanbul's most important mosque for c. 500 years. For the last 80 years, it has served as a museum.

While not in the greatest condition, it is an impressive space of amazing scale. It is said that the Statue of Liberty (sans torch) could fit inside the dome.

Fira Morning

Regretably, today was our last day in Santorini. A leisurely breakfast, from which this shot was taken back towards our hotel, followed by a short walk to a previously visited ceramics gallery (which will be the subject of future Flickr postings).

We would love to return to this paradise someday.

We went to the very tip of the island, to a town called Oia, for the sunset. This location provides a very different perspective than in Fira where we were staying. While shooting the sunset, I spotted this sailboat cruising the bay and liked the way the low sun illuminated the sails.

Today was dominated by a visit to the National Archeological Museum. There are thousands of artifacts that have been found, researched and displayed here, the earliest dating back to 7000 B.C. This Cycladic figurine dates back to c. 3000 B.C.

While on top of the Acropolis of Athens today, it was hard to imagine that these ruins are 10 times older than our country. This shot is of the Erechtheion, built between 421-406 B.C.

Sister of St. Matrona

Lin & I did a serious hike into the hills above Hydra to St. Matrona monastery. Hot and tired, the Sisters invited us in for some water, candies and a tour of the grounds and chapel (built in 1865). They were happy to have me take their picture, and in this image, one Sister was showing us her handiwork.

At the end of a 32 hour day, we're returning from dinner in Hydra. The white painted walls, along with the random streetlights, allow this area near the harbor to be navigable at night. Very quaint with no motorized vehicles on the island.

We boarded the plane at 2:00pm Saturday and didn't arrive in Frankfurt until 5:30am Sunday morning. This the one shot I got off on Saturday!

This shot also qualifies for the Daily Shoot assignment #314 on guilty pleasures. Even though business hasn't been great the last couple of years, Lin & I have done some European travel anyway. Do we feel guilty? Perhaps a little. Is the travel pleasurable? Absolutely!

Perfect assignment for today's Daily Shoot #313: "Make a photo of an interesting stack of books or magazines. Consider how you handle repeating lines in your composition."

We're leaving Saturday for our trip to Greece and Istanbul. Between the Rick Steves' guidebooks, the iPad, and a couple of maps, I'm hoping we're covered information-wise. The image on the iPad is of Santorini, one of the Greek islands we'll be visiting.

For my friends that follow my Project 365, DS posts, and Flickr photostream, rest assured I will be shooting every day. I may not be posting every day, so please be patient; I promise to catch up as quickly as possible. Now, gotta go finish packing...hmmm, how many lenses to bring?

Part 1: Today was a crazy shooting day. This morning at 0400, I checked DS and the assignment said to shoot something with a square frame. So at 0500, I took a shot at the San Francisco airport before flying home and on the way, did the PP on the iPad. When I got home and began the upload process, discovered that the DS assignment had changed!

Part 2: A super-wide angle lens (10mm-20mm) that I ordered for our upcoming trip arrived today. So rather than upload the original shot, the revised assignment provided perfect opportunity to try out the new lens. To my DS friend Crow, thanks!

I was invited tonight to attend the Dodgers-Giants game at AT&T Park in San Francisco. With the Giants leading in the 7th, and a 6am flight back to Chicago, I didn't stay for the whole game. Walking back to the car, I was struck by the beauty of the stadium lights, the rolling fog and the reflections on the water and knew this was going to be today's post.

For those following the Daily Shoot, I did take shots for today's assignment, but am not posting one until Sunday or Monday, because it will also qualify for MacroMondays.

I have been in this San Bruno neighborhood many times, but never deep enough to realize that Golden Gate National Cemetery was right there. Having read the Daily Shoot assignment #304 this morning, my glimpse of the stones while driving brought forth the idea for today's shot. I had only been to Arlington National Cemetery, and that was many, many years ago. As I entered the cemetery and drove around, I had a hard time fathoming the magnitude before me. I didn't spend much time...but I did say "Thank You".

Went out to lunch today without my camera and on the way back ran an errand through the train station. There was a vibrant retail path thru the station, so the cell phone camera saved me a return trip. Last week I had installed a free camera app that had several effects filters. This one, the Andy Warholizer, was appropriate for the scene. Shot for Daily Shoot #302: "Make a photograph of a path, sidewalk, trail, or road today and post it. Lead our eye through the scene."
